Background of the Study

Construction sites are high-risk environments where workers are exposed to injuries such as falls, burns, and equipment-related accidents. Immediate and effective first aid response can reduce the severity of injuries and prevent fatalities (WHO, 2024). First aid training is crucial for equipping workers with the necessary skills to respond to emergencies before professional medical help arrives.

In Benue State, construction workers often face workplace hazards, yet many lack adequate first aid training (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Despite regulatory requirements for first aid preparedness, the effectiveness of training programs in improving emergency response remains uncertain. This study examines the impact of first aid training on emergency response in Benue State construction sites.

Statement of the Problem

Workplace accidents on construction sites continue to be a major concern in Benue State, often leading to serious injuries and fatalities. Although first aid training is required for construction workers, there is a gap in evaluating its effectiveness in real emergency situations (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Poor knowledge and improper application of first aid techniques can delay critical care, worsening injury outcomes.

This study investigates how well first aid training programs equip construction workers in Benue State to handle emergencies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of first aid training among construction workers in Benue State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of first aid training in improving emergency response.
  3. To identify challenges in the implementation of first aid training programs on construction sites.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of first aid training among construction workers in Benue State?
  2. How effective is first aid training in improving emergency response on construction sites?
  3. What challenges affect the implementation of first aid training programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. First aid training has no significant impact on construction workers' emergency response skills.
  2. There is no significant relationship between first aid training and injury severity reduction.
  3. Challenges in training implementation do not significantly affect the effectiveness of first aid education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on construction workers in Benue State, assessing their first aid knowledge and response effectiveness. Limitations include differences in training accessibility, variations in workplace hazards, and the unpredictable nature of emergencies.

Definitions of Terms

  • First Aid Training: Instruction provided to individuals on emergency care techniques before professional medical assistance is available.
  • Emergency Response: The immediate actions taken to manage medical emergencies or injuries.
  • Construction Sites: Work locations where buildings or infrastructure projects are being developed.
